Dealing with Your Lip Piercing Hole Infection

Even though lip piercing is becoming more popular, people still are not properly educating themselves about the risks of their lip piercing hole becoming infected.  Improper piercing cleaning techniques or nit using the right cleaning products can potentially cause a variety of different problems from irritation to infection.

Lip Piercing Hole Infections

If you have an infection, you were more than likely not using a recommended method of keeping your lip piercing hole clean or following other important directions.  Those who have had other piercings are sometimes surprised by how long a lip piercing takes to heal, 6 to 10 weeks, giving quite a bit of time for bacteria or a virus to make itself at home in your lip.

You know you have an infection if you have some major side effects, including severe throbbing, irritation, burning, itching, or discharge coming from hole that is foul smelling.  In some cases, you may even be having a fever due to your body trying to fight off the infection.  More severe infections may even cause the lymph nodes to swell in your neck.

Oral Piercing Care: Fight Your Infection

If you catch your infection early enough, you can treat the infection with the proper oral piercing aftercare, similar to what you were instructed to do when you first got your piercing. This should include an oral piercing cleaning product that is sea salt based, like H2Ocean. You will need to rinse your hole with this solution, as well as use an anti-bacterial mouthwash regularly for up to a week. If your infection seems to be getting worse, however, you may need to visit a doctor to get an antibiotic.

You can avoid having a dangerous infection if you keep using the proper oral piercing aftercare throughout the entire healing process. Just remember to rinse your mouth three to four times a day with your sea salt solution and your infection will start going away in no time.
